Overview
ATI Africa helps African businesses navigate legal, regulatory, and operational complexity with more clarity and less risk.
Long term, the vision is an AI powered legal assistant tailored to African markets, starting with Nigerian business law. This phase was not about shipping a chatbot. It was about earning trust first.
I focused on early product discovery and a desktop first web experience that explains what ATI is, what it is not, and why users should believe it. The work sets up the foundation for future AI features without overpromising capability.

Context
Entrepreneurs and business owners across Africa often rely on fragmented legal information: informal advice, scattered online sources, and expensive consultations. Even when information exists, it is often written in language that is hard to interpret quickly. That slows decisions and increases compliance risk.
ATI saw an opportunity to bridge that gap with an AI powered legal assistant designed for African markets. Early discovery surfaced the real blocker: trust. People were open to AI assistance, but only if the guidance felt accurate, jurisdiction specific, and professionally grounded.
At this stage, advanced AI workflows were intentionally deferred. The immediate design challenge was credibility.
Problem statement
How might ATI establish itself as a trusted legal authority before the AI assistant is fully built, while still designing a foundation that can support AI later without misleading users?

My Role
& Constraints
My Role & Constraints
My Role & Constraints
I partnered closely with the founder to shape early product direction and define what an AI assisted legal product could responsibly promise at launch.
What I did
Translated business and regulatory goals into a clear product direction
Defined the initial information architecture and core desktop surfaces
Designed the public website and foundational product touchpoints
Ran early discovery to understand user needs, trust barriers, and expectations
Framed the product to establish credibility before advanced AI functionality
This phase focused on product definition and trust building, not feature completeness.
Constraints
Early stage product: advanced AI features like document upload and complex chat states were intentionally out of scope
Trust sensitive domain: legal guidance requires clear boundaries and careful language
Desktop first requirement: layout and interaction patterns were designed for focused reading and decision making
Limited MVP surface: education, account creation, and subscription intent came first
Brand continuity: the experience needed to align with ATI Africa’s existing brand system

DISCOVERY &
KEY INSIGHTS
DISCOVERY & KEY INSIGHTS
DISCOVERY & KEY INSIGHTS
Discovery focused on how African entrepreneurs currently make legal decisions and what would make them trust an AI assisted legal product.
What we heard
Most people stitch together advice from friends, online sources, and paid consultations
Legal information is often difficult to interpret without context
Interest in AI support is real, but trust is a prerequisite
Users want clear boundaries around what the assistant can and
cannot do

Key Insights
Trust must come before intelligence
People care less about how advanced the AI is and more about whether guidance feels legitimate and jurisdiction specific.

2. Overpromising creates risk
Vague positioning damages credibility in legal contexts.

3. Clarity beats speed
Structured explanations matter more than instant answers.

4. Desktop feels safer for legal work
Users associate desktop with seriousness and professionalism.

5. Guidance is as important as answers
Users want help asking the right questions, not just receiving output.

Design Approach
Design Approach
The design approach centered on trust, clarity, and restraint. Instead of pushing automation, the experience guides users through understanding: what ATI does, what it covers, and when to talk to a human.
The goal was to feel grounded and intentionally scoped, positioning ATI as a reliable partner, not an all knowing system.

KEY User Flow
KEY User Flow
Flow 1: First time visitor to product understanding
Why this flow matters:
Legal products do not get a second chance. This flow helps users quickly understand what ATI is, who it serves, and the kind of help it offers before asking for commitment.

Flow 2: Credibility building to trust validation
Why this flow matters:
In a legal context, users look for legitimacy before they engage. This flow builds confidence through clear services, leadership transparency, and professional positioning.

Flow 3: Intent to engage to human contact
Why this flow matters:
When the stakes are high, people often want reassurance. This flow supports low friction contact and keeps the experience human first, without forcing automation

OUTCOME & LEARNINGS
ATI now has a credible foundation for an AI powered legal product that is still early stage.
This phase delivered a desktop first web experience that:
Communicates ATI’s mission before introducing advanced AI
Builds legitimacy through transparent positioning and leadership visibility
Encourages engagement through low risk contact
Sets up future AI expansion without misleading users today
Results so far
Clear information architecture across Home, About, Services, News and Insights, and Contact
Trust first positioning that reduces overpromise risk in a sensitive domain
A scalable foundation that can support future assistant workflows without resetting expectations
Learnings
Restraint is a design strength in high risk domains
Founders and mission are functional UI elements when trust is the product
Progressive readiness beats feature completeness when credibility is the bottleneck
